Serfs were encouraged to have many children because a small family might not have enough daylight hours to tend their family plot after their work in the Lord’s fields was complete.

Serfs were not allowed to marry without permission from the Lord the family of a serf would have to turn over additional crops when someone wanted to marry and leave the manor. In exchange, serfs were required to work a particular number of days on the lord’s personal fields. The Lord provided the serf and his family a safe place to live and land to grow food. The nobles, in turn, rented out land to knights in return for their promise of allegiance. King William claimed all the land for himself and proceeded to rent out percentages of it to the nobles.

Wars usually broke out because of disputes between lords and vassals. WARFARE WARS were destructive to peasants and opportunities for the nobles. Vassals could grant land to knights creating a contract with them, and becoming lords themselves. Vassals are subject to the will of their Lord.

LORDS ,VASSALS,& KNIGHTS Lords would grant land to vassals who would give their loyalty and protection to the lord in return. The contract between lord and vassal was called a FIEF. A powerful lord could grant land to a vassal.A lord granted a vassal land in exchange for loyalty, military assistance and other services.
